What is a Competency Assessment?

A Behaviour Technician (BT) must pass an Initial Competency Assessment (and written tests) to become a certified ABA professional, same as a medical student must pass the board test to become a physician.

Although it is not the only prerequisite, the Competency Assessment tests the BT’s ability to apply what they have learnt in their 40-hour training program to real-world scenarios. When the BT shows proficiency in every task as judged by the assessor, the assessment is complete (more on this below).

According to the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board, you need to show that you can use the jargon, put different behaviour mechanisms into practice, and assess how well they work.

After you finish your 40-hour training, only then can you take the test. An applicant for RBT certification must complete the evaluation no later than 90 days prior to the planned submission date.

What’s on the Test?

For the RBT Competency Assessment, you have to complete twenty activities. Who Administers the Assessment

RBT Competency Assessment administration is not permissible for all individuals. The test can only be given by people who are BACB-certified (BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D) and have had the necessary 8 hours of supervision training.

The assessor is responsible for administering the test and recording results in a way that complies with BACB regulations. They have to sign the Initial Competency Assessment, keep all records of all tests, make sure the assessment satisfies quality criteria.

Perhaps an assistant assessor is also doing the evaluation. The helper must always be with the accountable, primary assessor as they do not have a BACB accreditation. An accountable assessor may entrust an assistant with part of the assessment, but that person must adhere to all professional and ethical standards.

Thanks to the BACB, the individual responsible for implementing your 40-hour training program may also serve as your assessor.

What to Expect When Completing the Assessment

All of your training and hard work as an RBT applicant have culminated in this moment. Over one or more sessions, the RBT Competency Assessment might be carried out either personally or online.

While you take the exam, the evaluator will watch you do each of the aforementioned activities and then give you feedback on how well you did. There are three different kinds of assessments that they could ask you to do, depending on the tasks:

Perform the task with a client the assessor will observe and evaluate your performance.

Roll-playing the assessor will evaluate your performance of the task in the presence of another individual who is assuming the role of a client.

Live Interview the assessor will conduct a live interview, whether in person or online, during which you will be required to provide examples and provide a detailed explanation of the relevant concept.

The assessor may provide suggestions for improvement if you fail to show competency in a certain area. The evaluation will then be repeated later on to see whether competence is now shown.
