The 40-hour Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT) Course and the 8-hour Supervision Training will be subject to new standards set by the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board (BACB) on April 1, 2025.
These are some of the most common questions people have about these changes, along with some tips on ensuring your staff has the lessons they need to meet the new rules.
1. Who does this impact?
The changes made on April 1, 2025, mean that:
- This rule affects you if your Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) business has hired or wants to hire new staff.
- You can’t use old 40-Hour RBT courses anymore. Make sure that any classes you give your staff meet the 2nd RBT Task List.
- If technicians who took the old RBT course have not passed the RBT test by April1, 2025, they may need a “bridge” course that gives them more RBT training.
- The BACB’s new Supervision Training Curriculum v2.0 says that new BCBAs, BCBA-Ds, and BCaBAs must take an 8-hour Supervision Course to be able to oversee.
How can CentralReach help?
The teaching and study part of CentralReach, called CR Institute, has made new material that meets the new rules. The new 40-Hour RBT Course and the compatible 8-Hour Supervision Course were made by our team of BCBA and BCBA-D experts and can be found on our Learning Management System (LMS).
You can give new employees the RBT or Supervision course right away, then you can see how they’re doing, see the results of the quizzes, and decide how to improve and optimise your training processes.
2. What is the 40-Hour RBT Course, and why is it important?
The RBT badge is needed by many organisations and third-party payers for direct service staff. To get this officially recognised credential, you must first pass the 40-hour RBT course.
Visit the BACB page to see all the steps you need to take to get and keep your RBT pass.
In order for RBTs to help clients with autism reach their full potential, they need to not only complete a 40-hour RBT training that follows the BACB task list but also use and expand on what they’ve learnt at work.
How can CentralReach help?
You can use CentralReach’s push-button Learning Management system to find a brand-new 40-Hour RBT Course. We are not just watching a video lesson in this study taught by Dr. Shannon Hill, BCBA-D. Players interact with locations, match cards, and complete a variety of applicable tasks. The BACB’s 2nd RBT Task List is fully met by the course.
For techs who have already taken an RBT course but didn’t pass the test before April 1, 2025, CentralReach can offer a ‘bridge’ course. This will save you hours of practice and training time!
3. What changes did the BACB make that impacted the 40-Hour RBT Course?
The BACB says that most of the changes were made to the RBT Task List, which lists the basic skills and information that a behaviour technician must have to “meet the requirements for successful practice.” In the December 2018 BACB Newsletter, you can find news and updates about the 2nd RBT Task List.
According to the BACB, the new course must be taken over at least 5 calendar days. This and other new rules can be followed by the CentralReach 40-Hour RBT Course.
4. What is the 8-hour Supervision Course, and why is it important?
Before they can record any supervisees, the BACB requires that new BCBAs, BCaBAs, and BCBA-Ds go through an 8-hour supervision training that follows the BACB supervisor training curriculum. A behaviour analyst has to pass this training before they can take care of a group of clients.
In addition, every two years, BCBAs who supervise must complete at least three continuing education units (CEUs) in supervision. This makes sure that they know the best ways to supervise direct care workers and that they can still manage RBTs, BCaBAs, and/or people who are trying to get their BCBA certificate.
How can CentralReach help?
Easily assign unique pieces of material to individual users is a built-in feature of the CentralReach Learning Management System. Give your direct care staff RBT classes and your BCBAs CEUs or training. If an ABA office wants to keep their license up to date every two years, they can offer the 8-Hour Supervision Course right away and give their staff access to a growing library of more than 100 CEUs.
5. Are there any additional changes coming from the BACB?
Yes. On the BACB website, you can see a full list of all the changes that are coming up.
Keep up with these changes, and know that CCentralReach will do everything it can to make sure that its large LMS catalogue of ABA training and CEUs is always up to date with the latest changes in the industry. To make sure your staff always has the most up-to-date, correct, and useful behavior-analytic classes, you should do this.
